Introducing aubrie

Little Spike has a little crush. Her name is aubrie. She is strong and delicate, ready for both wild adventure and tea parties. Preferably at the same time.

aubrie is Little Spike’s local hero!  Designed up the road on Sydney’s beautiful northern beaches, aubrie is for little girls with big imagination.  Taking inspiration from little girls everywhere, aubrie offers timeless femininity, vintage details, pretty prints and soft colours in beautiful, natural fabrics.  She describes herself as pretty yet practical, playful but never precious. Just as every little girl should be!

For our first season at Little Spike, we’ve chosen some delightful little numbers from aubrie which are simply begging for adventure.  I don’t have little girls of my own.  But if I did, I’d find it pretty hard to go past these…

The literature nerd in me also loves the playful nod to some English classics (like the ‘Puck’ playsuit for mischievous little girls (and Shakespearean faeries…); and the ‘Maid Marion’ dress recalling Robin Hood’s strong-willed lady). I also love the beautifully evocative ‘Folkdancing’ dress in Midnight print and the ‘Sherpa’ vest in faux sheepskin. For the little ones, who could go past the adorable ‘Pitter Patter’ playsuit? And if pink is not your favourite, 'Puck' and 'Pitter Patter' also come in a beautiful charcoal.

A look on the inside of an aubrie garment will also tell you a lot about the value placed on quality. Think fine fabrics, pretty linings and French seams - all signs of excellent craftsmanship.

These beauties are yearning to feature in stories played out in gardens everywhere.  I’m sure you know an imaginative little girl who could breathe life into them and make them her very own.

For the next week, you can enjoy $10 off your next Aubrie purchase.  Enter coupon: AUBRIEINTRO during checkout. Valid until Wednesday 29 June 2016 (limit one per customer). View our full aubrie collection here.

Introducing the Bonnie Mob

Well, who’s up for a romp through the Scottish countryside? Come along then, wee lads and lasses: let’s meet the Bonnie Mob!

Don’t know who the Bonnie Mob is?  Fair enough.  They haven’t really been seen much in Australia before.  But they are known and coveted in many other parts of the world.  They are also sold in independent boutiques and department stores like Selfridges London, Barney’s NY, Isetan Tokyo, Sogo Shanghai and a flagship store in Hong Kong.  And you can now add Little Spike Australia to that illustrious mix, thank you very much! ;)

The Bonnie Mob is a UK clothing brand that creates beautiful baby clothes, baby gifts and children's clothing. They make high quality, long lasting, fun, colourful designs that are comfortable and that kids love to wear. As knitwear and jerseywear specialists, they choose organic cottons wherever possible and pride themselves on ethical trading.

Here at Little Spike HQ, we’re a wee bit in love. The collection draws inspiration from designer Tracey Samuel’s own childhood growing up in the Scottish countryside in the 70s and 80s, always on adventure building huts, looking for wildlife and causing mischief on her bike.  Or being stuck indoors on cloudy Scottish rainy days, dancing to Abba on the radio and drawing endless felt-tip pen masterpieces.  The colour palette is a soft monochrome of greys, charcoal and cream, mixed with bright yellow, mustard, teal, coral and pink. The jersey and cotton knits are in 100% certified organic cotton with other yarns having a cashmere touch, everything is super soft and snuggly, but machine washable for practicality.

Our personal favourites? We love:

The Bingo Interchangeable playsuit to sleepbag makes a sweet and practical gift for baby boys and girls and comes in a range of prints and colours in 100% organic cotton.  Available in 0-3m, 6-12m, 12-18m and 18-24m.

The Islay quilted jacket in grey or pink which is fabulous to dress babies up or down. Available in sizes 6-12m or 12 to18m.

The Laurie chunky knit jumper is also divine but limited. It is currently available in sizes 6-12m or 12-18m.

The Artist embroidered sweatshirt is perfect for the budding Picassos! Available in 6-12m and 12-18m.

We salute you, the Bonnie Bob

And so it begins... starting an online designer clothes store for Australian children

Here’s how it works. Or not, as the case may be, but let’s hope it’s the former.

You see, this is a bit of an experiment for me.  Apart from the student job in a stationery store many years ago, I have very little experience in retail. And apart from being a consumer myself, I had no pre-existing relationships with suppliers. While I do have experience in marketing, very little of what I have done in the world of professional services (lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc) is directly relevant here.  I’ve never had a website before, nor a blog and my social media presence has mostly been limited to being an Enthusiastic Liker of Things rather than starting or contributing to meaningful discussions. To put it simply, I have absolutely no credentials for this whatsoever and am largely winging it.

So, it’s an experiment. And I’m out of my comfort zone.  But it’s a large part of why I’m so far having fun!  Already, there are definitely things I would have done differently (ah hindsight, there you are!), but as they say, it’s all good experience and hopefully I can apply those lessons in future seasons.

But because this is my first season, I feel I should give people a bit of fair warning…

I am pretty excited to be showcasing some amazing brands.  Over the coming posts, I will be introducing you to them and also to some of the designers.  They are all pretty special and I believe add something to the children’s clothing space that I think is hard to come by in Australia.

For many of the European brands, you won’t currently find them at any other Australian retailer.  But fair warning... if you like something, you’d better get in quick! Because they’re sourced from Europe and their season is ahead of ours, once they are sold out, we won’t be replenishing our stock. Why not take a look now?
